How to Overcome Procrastination and Achieve More

Procrastination!

Yea, let’s talk about procrastination. Many great men have been pulled down by this familiar giant.

Familiar?

Yea, it is because everyone is quite familiar with it. It affects both Tom and Dick. If you haven’t heard about it I guess you are still a learner in English language.

Alright, I suppose we should know what this giant is all about. To procrastinate is to delay or postpone an action, a task, job, project or any other activity. A lot has been written on it and I guess you are or once a victim of this behavior, otherwise, you shouldn’t be reading this.

Procrastination is a thief of time; it robs you of your productivity, creativity, progress, even your money. This is a real bad guy, and my purpose in this article is to help you understand this guy, show you how it operates, how to overcome him, and possibly make a decision to overcome him.

I remember a friend of mine who was mesmerized by this guy, he wrote me one day narrating his ordeal, read what he wrote:
“When I say ‘I will do this now’, some force inside persuades me to leave it later. After some experiences and reasoning, I discovered that all these forces come from one source and had one father, ‘PROCRASTINATION’.”
“It kills me, it delays my achievement, it inhibits my favor, and it wakens my courage and lots more. I condoned it and nearly condemn myself to failure. I have to fight it and take a flight to success. Thanks to the recipe you shared with me.”

What I want to share with you is that recipe that helped my friend overcome this giant. Before I discuss the recipe, I believe it is important we understand causes of procrastination which will definitely help us to overcome it. How can you cure a disease you don’t understand its cause?

Causes of Procrastination

Procrastination has endless causes, but I am going to be specific in listing those causes that are common and so rampant among us. They are:

  •         Stress
  •         Laziness
  •         Overwhelming tasks
  •         Lack of discipline
  •         Poor time management
  •         Lack of skill

The Recipe

Having known the possible causes of procrastination, let’s proceed to the recipe that will help you overcome this giant and give your life a meaning.

Get Started:

The first thing to do when confronted with a task and there seems to be a reason to procrastinate is to get started with the task. Once you get started, you will discover that to keep working is less easy, just as it is easier to keep a car moving than to get it to move. If you summon enough courage to get started, procrastination won’t be an issue. Finally getting the job done will provoke self-fulfillment.

Be Discipline:

Discipline should be your fight against procrastination. There is no such thing as overcoming procrastination without applying discipline in your work. Discipline could be issue for so many but if you really have a purpose and you want to enjoy career or personal fulfillment and success, you should have enough courage to discipline yourself to get what you want. Remember: “no pain no gain”.

Break the Tasks Down:

One of the causes of procrastination as mentioned earlier is overwhelming tasks. When you have a lot of work to do, mere looking at it and calculating how much energy and time is needed to get it done can overwhelm someone. That can have a strong emotional effect on you and overpower you completely. The remedy is just to break the tasks down into smaller units and try to handle it bit by bit; before you know it, you are done with the whole job. This recipe has saved a lot of mental stress for me. Thanks to my mum.

Be Focus:

Even after breaking the tasks into small units, be focused in doing each unit as fast as possible. This is where the skill of time management is important. All these recipes work together. Focusing on job cannot work effectively without discipline. Now, discipline comes into play to show you how crucial it is.

Make the Job Fun:

Have you discover that people don’t see catching fun as work. Any fun such as recreation is enjoyed by people not as work or a bugging task but a means of happiness. That is the mentality you should acquire towards your job. See it as fun, handle it as fun and enjoy doing it as fun. By so doing, it will be easier to get it done as quickly as possible. People don’t procrastinate having fun. Lol!
