“Equo ne credite, Teucri. Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et
dona ferentes” wrote Virgil, Roman poet, best known for his national epic, the
Aeneid, meaning “Do not trust the horse, Trojans. Whatever it is, I fear Greeks
bearing gifts”
There is power in giving gifts and blessing in receiving
gifts, but not all gifts are worth taking….
I guess you have seen the movie “Troy”. One important story line
in the movie is the destruction of the City, Troy, after 10 years siege by
the Greek army, when they offered Troy wooden horse, later known as the Trojan horse,
as what appeared to be a gift, which was received as Victory Trophy.
Metaphorically a "Trojan Horse" has come to mean
any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a foe into a securely
protected bastion or place. As bad as it is, computer scientist has taken the
term to mean a malicious computer program which tricks users into willingly
running it, causing harm to files within the system.
In Life, there are gifts that appears to be a friendly offer,
beautiful, amazing, attractive, charming, delightful, exquisite, incredible, and
unique but comes with it a hidden agenda. These are Trojan Horses. You need to be
vigilant against this kind of gifts.
A young man in love was advised against marring the charming young lady
with distasteful character he was dating. He was blinded by emotion and married
this lady against all good counsel. He succeeded in convincing himself that she
was the perfect gift for him. Far from it, Trojan horse can’t be a perfect gift
for anyone with good sense of reasoning and on the right state of mind.
After about 3 years of a violent and incompatible marriage,
the young man couldn’t put up with her attitude any further, and both got a
divorce. He has lost about 70% of his wealth to fights and mismanagement courtesy
of a soured marriage. He regretted having allowed himself to be blinded by
deceitful emotion.
You see, in John 1:17, the bible says “every good and
perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows”. God can’t give you what is
contaminated and there is the kind of gift you should seek after - God sent, not a Trojan
horse.
